Nearly forty years after The Shining, Doctor Sleep returned to the Overlook Hotel. Mike Flanagan and his team rebuilt familiar rooms and recreated several of Kubrick’s shots, sometimes with remarkably close results.
The similarities go beyond the sets themselves. Camera movements, compositions and character positions return throughout the film. In some scenes, an adult Danny even finds himself standing where his parents once stood.
Here are four of the clearest examples.
Shots Doctor Sleep recreates
Danny's tricycle
Doctor Sleep returns to the same patterned carpets and long corridors, with the camera once again following Danny's tricycle from behind. Flanagan has spoken about how difficult it was to reproduce the Steadicam movement of Kubrick's original shot.
The Grady twins
Doctor Sleep echoes Danny's encounter with the Grady twins through Abra. The long corridor and centered composition closely resemble the original shot, this time with Abra standing where Danny once did.
The staircase
The Colorado Lounge staircase returns during Dan's confrontation with Rose the Hat. Dan stands where his mother once did, backing up the stairs as Rose approaches him in much the same way Wendy backed away from Jack.
The bloody elevator
The Overlook's bloody elevator appears again in Doctor Sleep. While much of the familiar imagery was recreated for the film, footage from Kubrick's original elevator sequence was also reused.
